There are two primary types of heating appliances used to run a central heating system: a furnace and a boiler. The furnace is the most common provider of heat, and it runs on either gas or oil.
In a furnace, burners generate combustion gases that are moved through a heat exchanger. Once those gases pass through the furnace, air blows into the exchange to be heated. Once warmed, the air is delivered into your home through air ducts. On the other hand, boiler systems send hot water or stream through your pipes to radiators that are located throughout the house.
How Your Cooling System Works
Air conditioners are powered by electricity. Most central cooling systems have an outdoor condenser coil and compressor, and an indoor evaporator coil. The indoor coil is installed in conjunction with your furnace and works to pump out cold air using a refrigerant chemical.
Once warm air blows across the indoor evaporator coil, its heat energy transfers to the refrigerant inside the coil and cools the air. The heat absorbed by the refrigerant is moved outside of your home, and the cool air is blown inside.

Heating and Cooling Distribution Systems
Central heating and cooling systems often share one distribution system to move the air through your house, called a forced-air system. Forced-air systems distribute air using an electrically powered fan or blower. The fan forces air through a system of metal ducts to each room of your home.
Central heating systems use these ducts to distribute warm air into your house and return cold air to your furnace to be warmed. Central cooling systems distribute cooled air throughout your home and bring warmer air back to be cooled.
Heating and Cooling System Controls
The final component of your heating and cooling system is the control or thermostat. This heat-sensitive switch is used to regulate your home’s temperature. As you adjust your thermostat, it responds to the air temperature changes where it’s located and turns your furnace or air conditioner on or off as needed to maintain the temperature set point. If you use one distribution system for both your heating and cooling, your thermostat will have the option to toggle between both systems.
